Using biobanks for research

Biobanks enable access to a large pool of high-quality human samples and associated data. They are reliable hubs for the storage and processing of samples from clinical trials and other sources. As such, they establish important conditions for achieving reproducible research results.

Guide for quality-promoting aspects in medicine and biomedicine

In June 2021, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) published a guideline that helps to systematically describe quality-promoting aspects in funding proposals and thus to better take them into account in review and evaluation. The quality of the biospecimens and data sets used as well as the use of suitable research infrastructures - such as certified biobanks - are mentioned as particularly central points.

The key quality-promoting measures for medical and biomedical research listed in the guideline were compiled by the working group "Quality in Clinical Research" on the basis of an exchange with representatives of life science review boards - including Prof. Dr. Michael Hummel, head of the German Biobank Node (GBN), and Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Prokosch, member of the GBN steering committee.
